There are different IOL options available for the treatment of both cataracts and presbyopia –monofocal and multifocal lenses. Multifocal lenses are designed for Maryland cataracts and presbyopia patients who have a strong desire for clear vision at all distances and greater independence from glasses or contacts. Monofocal lenses, on the other hand, offer very good vision at a single focal point, which means most patients may require reading glasses or bifocals to have a full range of vision.
At Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons, we are proud to offer our cataract surgery patients premium multifocal lenses for a full range of vision and freedom from corrective eyewear. Please read the paragraphs below to learn about ReZoom, ReSTOR and Tecnis Multifocal IOLs.
The AcrySof ReSTOR Apodized Diffractive Optic Posterior Intraocular Lens is a permanent artificial lens. The ReSTOR lens is convex on both sides and made of a soft plastic. It is folded and inserted into the eye through a tiny incision smaller than the optic diameter of the lens. After insertion, the lens gently unfolds to ReSTOR vision. The supporting arms of the lens maintain proper positioning within the eye.
The AcrySof ReSTOR Intraocular Lens is used in adult patients with and without presbyopia who desire near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses and contact lenses. It is FDA approved for use after cataract surgery.
The AcrySof ReSTOR IOL has a patented optic design using apodization, diffraction and refraction technologies. The apodized diffractive optic design gives it the ability to focus light correctly on the retina for images at various distances without mechanical movement of the lens.
When is ReSTOR® used?
The AcrySof ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens is used in adult patients with and without presbyopia, who desire near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses and contact lenses. It is FDA approved for use after cataract surgery.

What will ReSTOR® be able to accomplish?
The AcrySof ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens has been shown in a clinical study to provide good near, intermediate and distance vision with increased independence from glasses.
When should ReSTOR® not be used?
There are no known contraindications. However, based on the FDA clinical trials, Alcon, the lens manufacturer, has indicated the following types of patients possibly should not have the AcrySof ReSTOR® Apodized Diffractive Intraocular Lens:
Who is a good candidate for the ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens?
Virtually everyone who has cataracts and is in good general health may be candidate for implant surgery, but people with chronic infections, uncontrolled diabetes, or other health problems may have to wait until these conditions are under control prior to surgery.
People who have had prior laser eye surgery including LASIK, Custom LASIK, PRK, LASEK, Epi LASIK or any other corneal Laser Eye Surgery may be acceptable candidates for ReSTOR® implantation as long as their eyes are in good health. After a thorough examination and consultation, your surgeon will be able to better advise you if you qualify for the ReSTOR® implant.
Tecnis Multifocal is a uniquely engineered lens implant that provides postoperative Maryland cataract surgery patients with clear vision at multiple distances. In fact, many cataract surgery patients who receive a multifocal IOL, such as Tecnis, are able to see well enough without having to wear glasses or contact lenses. In clinical trials, 88 percent of patients reported never needing to wear glasses or contacts six months after receiving the Tecnis IOL.
The Tecnis Multifocal lens has an aspheric front surface and a multifocal surface located on the back of the lens. Each surface consists of several concentric rings designed to create focusing zones that bend light differently for multifocal correction. In addition, Tecnis Multifocal is available in two materials — silicone and soft acrylic — both of which are flexible and can be folded for surgical placement through a small, self-sealing incision.
Drs. Solomon of Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons can help you decide whether Tecnis is right for you based on your unique vision correction needs.

If freedom from eyeglasses for distance vision is important to you, you now have a better option. The unique design of the AcrySof® Toric lens provides significantly improved distance vision and may reduce the need for corrective lenses. The AcrySof® Toric lens is a foldable, single piece lens that an eye surgeon implants during cataract surgery to replace the clouded lens. The unique design of the AcrySof® Toric IOL makes it possible to reduce or eliminate corneal astigmatism and significantly improve uncorrected distance vision. AcrySof® Toric lens provides QUALITY distance vision, independent of eyeglasses and contact lenses. The AcrySof® Toric lens is made of the same biocompatible lens material already successfully implanted in more than 25 million eyes since 1991.
If you rely on your eyeglasses, you may have experienced the inconvenience of not being able to find your glasses when you really need them. Eyeglasses are easily lost or damaged, expensive to replace, and inconvenient to clean and maintain. The more active you are, the more eyeglasses interfere with your lifestyle by complicating your participation in daily and recreational activities.
Many people do not like the "look" of glasses and prefer another type of vision correction, such as contact lenses. "Toric" contact lenses designed to correct astigmatism are an option; however, some users find them uncomfortable and experience difficulty in adjusting to wearing them. There are several surgical options your surgeon may choose to treat astigmatism, such as LASIK laser vision correction, astigmatic keratotomy (AK), or limbal relaxing incisions (LRI). However, if you are planning to have surgery to remove a cataract, you now have an additional option...an implantable lens that makes it possible to treat the cataract and correct the corneal astigmatism at the same time. Your eye doctor will recommend the option that is best for you Surgery to treat cataracts is an outpatient procedure where an eye surgeon removes the clouded natural lens and replaces it with an artificial lens. Traditionally, the surgeon implants a monofocal artificial lens, commonly called an "intraocular lens" (IOL). If you have astigmatism, however, you may still experience blurred and distorted vision because a standard IOL cannot correct corneal astigmatism. To achieve quality distance vision with a standard IOL, you may still require eyeglasses, contact lenses, or further surgery.
