The talented eye surgeons of Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons strive to help all of their patients realize their dreams of clear vision without glasses. Recognizing that not all individuals are LASIK candidates, Dr. Jonathan Solomon and Dr. Stephen Solomon offer several variations of laser eye surgery, including PRK and LASEK. They have extensive experience performing these procedures, and they have been recognized as leading Maryland PRK and LASEK surgeons. Read on to learn more about these procedures and find out which one might be the best for you.
The PRK procedure was developed before LASIK, and it has helped millions of people worldwide achieve 20/20 vision or better. After the introduction of LASIK, the PRK procedure has generally been reserved for eyes with inadequate corneal thickness. This is because the PRK procedure does not involve the creation of a corneal flap. Instead, the laser energy is applied directly onto the eye's cornea. Another group of patients for whom PRK might be more appropriate than LASIK are individuals who are at risk for flap-related complications and eye injuries, such as athletes and combat personnel.
The main advantage of PRK is that this procedure completely eliminates the risk of flap-related complications. In addition, it might lead to better nighttime vision. However, prospective Maryland PRK patients should keep in mind that recovery after PRK takes somewhat longer than recovery after LASIK. After PRK, full visual acuity is usually achieved within four to seven days. After the healing period is over, most PRK Maryland patients enjoy results similar to or better than those achieve with LASIK.
LASEK is another alternative to LASIK that might be appropriate for patients who are not Maryland LASIK candidates. Unlike PRK, the LASEK procedure requires a flap. However, the epithelial flap created during LASEK is significantly thinner than the corneal flap created during LASIK. This difference makes LASEK appropriate for many patients with corneas that are too thin or too curved for LASIK. Like PRK and LASIK, LASEK surgery is used to correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.
You might be a LASEK or PRK Maryland candidate if you are at least 18 years old, you have healthy corneas, and your vision has been stable for at least one year. However, only a personal consultation with one of Solomon Eye Physicians and Surgeons' experienced eye surgeons will tell you definitively whether you should pursue laser eye surgery.
